After working with the entire Luis Russell group a week earlier on remakes of ''Funny Feathers'' and ''How Do They Do It That Way'', Vee made four exceptional recordings with part of this band on October 1, 1929.
The finest recording, one of Vee's greatest achievements both lyrically and vocally, is ''Moaning The Blues'', which has several wordless choruses with subtle differences between them. Listen also to the surprising description of himself as ''the only one in my family to take a biscuit to pieces and put it back just like it was''. The musicians, led by trumpeter Henry ''Red'' Allen, trombonist J.C. Higginbotham and Pops Foster with his phenomenally muscular bass, sound like men in a lifeboat on a rough sea as they throw blues growls and grunts back and forth to each other.
