Blackburn Rovers signed defender, Henning Berg, in January 1993 for a fee of £400k from Lillestrom after the Norwegian had impressed manager Kenny Dalglish during an England v Norway match at Wembley months earlier.
Henning would end up being one of the best foreign defenders to play in the Premier League, enjoying a stellar career spanning a decade with Rovers and Manchester United, winning multiple honours in the process. The Norwegian featured six times for Rovers in the remainder of the 1992/93 campaign, however the following season saw him become an established regular in the Blackburn first team.
Able to play at both right back and centre back, Henning Berg became an invaluable member of a Rovers side fighting to win a Premier League title. Berg made 40 appearances in the Premier League in the 1993/94 season, scoring his first Rovers goal at Upton Park in April 1994 during a 2-1 Rovers win. Rovers finished second that season to Manchester United, but would go one better the following season, with Henning playing a key role in the Rovers backline. Stationed at right back for the majority of the 1994/95 season, Berg made 40 Premier League appearances, missing only two games. The defender's composure and ability to intercept the ball saw him solidify the right hand side for Rovers with Stuart Ripley playing further up ahead of him.
Following Rovers' title triumph, Henning would stay at Rovers for two more seasons, making a combined 90 appearances during those two campaigns, before leaving to sign for Manchester United in the summer of 1997.
This was not the end of the Henning Berg and Blackburn Rovers story however, as Berg returned to Rovers for a second spell in September 2000. Signed initially on loan for three months by Graeme Souness, he was signed up permanently in late 2000 and played a pivotal role in Blackburn's promotion back to the Premier League in May 2001.
Now aged 31 and having experienced playing at the highest level, Berg showed himself to be an important addition for Rovers for a second time and played his part in helping establish Rovers as a Premier League club again. The defender lining up alongside another experienced campaigner in Craig Short, helped form a sturdy defensive wall which the bigger sides often found difficult to break down. The 2001/02 campaign saw Berg making 38 appearances in all as Rovers claimed a top 10 finish in the Premier League. Most notable of all was Berg's contribution in Blackburn's League Cup triumph, with the Norwegian lifting the trophy alongside Garry Flitcroft after the final whistle.
Henning was to stay at Rovers for one more season, that being the 2002/03 season and it was a fitting way for the defender to leave the club, as Rovers clinched a UEFA Cup spot on the final day of the season by thumping Spurs at White Hart Lane.
Henning Berg's time as a Rovers player is packed with happy memories. Both spells saw him win silverware at the club, with his return in 2000 seeing Rovers return to the Premier League and pick up some fantastic wins along the way as Rovers established themselves as a top flight club again. Berg remains one of Blackburn's best signings and will always be remembered fondly due to the contribution he made to Rovers' success.
Henning Berg made 296 appearances in total for Rovers and scored 7 goals. Here are those goals.
