I don't own any rights for the song or any part of it.
It was the last song from "Nevermind" left for me to make a video for. The album is done, you can find all the songs in the "Nevermind" playlist on the channel.
"Stay Away" was written in 1990 and attempted at the studio in April of the same year. The sessions at Smart Studio were supposed to result in the second album for Sub Pop but eventually, the release was scrapped and the band used the tape as a demo to try to get a deal with another label.
"Stay Away" was titled "Pay To Play" back then and had different lyrics. This version was released on the "DGC rarities" various artists compilation and on the deluxe edition of "Nevermind".
A year after, Nirvana entered Sound City studio in California to record "Nevermind" with Butch Vig. The song was still called "Pay To Play" and it was only during the sessions that Kurt rewrote lyrics and changed the title. Kurt did his vocals live, singing and playing guitar but had a hard time with the "I don't know why" line. Vig suggested overdubbing this one line, Kurt did and offered his own suggestion: "Let's make this razor-sharp. Just in your face and then gone!". Vig put it into a sampler, shifted around so it matched the guitar part perfectly.
This was the final version of "Stay Away" released on "Nevermind".
Nirvana debuted the song in April 1990 in Cambridge. At that show, Kurt dumped a whole pitcher of ice water on Chad, and Krist talked about Madonna and sang a little bit of "Like A Virgin."
The final "Stay Away" performance happened in August 1993 in Seattle. The show was supposed to raise money for the Mia Zapata Investigation Fund. Mia Zapata was the lead singer of the Seattle punk band The Gits, who got murdered in July 1993.
Nirvana played as a surprise special guest; other performers were Hell Smells, Kill Sybil, Tad, Voodoo Gearshift. Since the show was running late, Krist had to use Kurt Danielson from Tad's bass rig. There was no time to move the bass rig to Krist's side of the stage, so Kurt's rig was set up on Krist's usual side. When Kurt was handed his guitar and told that they would have to play on opposite sides of the stage, he expressed concern and said they had never played that way before (although they did on at least 08/24/91). With the exception of Saturday Night Live, Kurt and Krist maintained their new sides of the stage at all future shows.
Also, it was the last show Nirvana played as a trio. From the next show, Pat joined. Which means that he had never played "Stay Away" live.
Lyrics:
Monkey see, monkey do
I don't know why I
Rather be deal than cool
I don't know why I
Every line ends in rhyme
I don't know why I
Less is more, love is blind
I don't know why I
Stay
Stay away (x3)
Give an inch, take a smile
I don't know why I
Fashion shits, fashion style
I don't know why I
Throw it out and keep it in
I don't know why I
Have to have poison skin
I don't know why I
Stay
Stay away (x3)
I don't know why I
I don't know why I
Stay
Stay away (x3)
Monkey See, monkey do
I don't know why I
Rather be deal than cool
I don't know why I
Every line ends in rhyme
I don't know why I
Less is more, love is blind
I don't know why I
Stay
Stay away (x3)
I don't know why I
I don't know why I
Stay
Stay away (x3)
Stay away (x5)
God is gay
