(12 Mar 2020) German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas on Thursday criticised US President Donald Trump's decision to impose a travel ban on most of Europe as part of containment efforts to stop the spread of coronavirus.
"The decision by the United States is one that has not been agreed with us," Maas said during a news conference in Berlin.
Trump's new restrictions apply only to most foreign citizens who have been in Europe’s passport-free travel zone at any point within 14 days prior to their arrival to the United States.
As Trump announced the decision on Wednesday, he also accused Europe of not acting quickly enough to address the “foreign virus” and claimed that US clusters were “seeded” by European travelers.
Reacting to Trump's comments about the European response, Maas said: "The reference in the announced decision to there being failures in Europe also indicates that, perhaps, less factual reasons played a role in that decision."
Maas spoke alongside visiting Bolivian foreign minister Karen Longaric Rodríguez, who expressed sympathies for Germans who had contracted the virus.
Regarding the upcoming general election in Bolivia, scheduled in May, Longaric Rodríguez said it was expected to go ahead as planned as only three coronavirus cases had been reported in the country.
For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia.
The vast majority of people recover from the new virus.
According to the World Health Organization, people with mild illness recover in about two weeks, while those with more severe illness may take three to six weeks to recover.
In mainland China, where the virus first appeared, more than 80,000 people have been diagnosed and more than 58,000 have so far recovered.
