Global food demand is estimated to rise around 50% in the next 30 years, while arable land per capita continuously decreases. On the other hand, the energy dependency of modern farming technics and the farm-to-fork food chain increases. Efficiency management has become a strategic factor for food and agriculture. The digital twin concept appears as one of the key methods for the efficiency management.
Digital twins in agriculture can potentially be used by farmers, agronomists, traders, and governmental authorities at different scales. It enables near-real-time crop status monitoring and management through the fusion of models, operational records, remote sensing data, and in-situ measurements. It has a wide span of potential usage that includes planning, production, farm management, basin management, market management, sustainability, and food logistics.
Although the popularity of the digital twin raises, there are also many questions about its feasibility, applicability, suggested methods, and possible performance in real-life cases. Professor Bedir Tekinerdogan is one of the leading scientists in digital twin research for agriculture. He will present and evaluate potentials, concerns, and suggestions about digital twins in agriculture.
