Installing a new diaphragm in a hard to find spring brake can is both stupid and dangerous. I am not putting this up as a how to or as a cautionary tale. You make your own choices and youtube is already full of self righteous safety police. I made the choice to do this and I am not of the opinion that working on these means death if you work methodically and follow some basic safety steps.
As to why I didn't show wrestling that spring pack back on over the diaphragm. Well the camera wasn't on and I had no intentions of reenacting it just for the film. That is the part where your face and that spring get far to close. In the grand scope of things it isn't a difficult part just slow and frustrating. Watching me do it is not going to teach you how. Hang the can on one of the ears and come straight down compressing the new diaphragm. Then twist the can just far enough off to one side to slip the other ear on. Next spend 20 minutes spinning and cursing the spring pack until that diaphragm centers itself.
NAPA part numbers for the diaphragms I bought were: MBI DP12 and MBI DP16. In this video you only see me putting in the larger ones, I bought the little ones for service brake cans that might fail on the road in the future. I don't think the spring brake diaphragms are exactly right but can be retrofitted, that is likely part of the difficulty in installing them.
