I've been asked about the lyrics a few times, like does it mean anything, and sure, yes it does. Paraphrased it's like...

Our lives lasts for a while like a play on a stage, and finally at some point we're all alone in it, and look back at our past before we leave this word.

And when we are dying we maybe linger 'Avalon' be it Valhalla or whatever it is for each of us expects to happen, maybe a paradise or purgatory, where we are still left alone, waiting to get released to eternity.

And peope carry stories of what happens there, throughout the history, although nobody knows what happens there; it goes on thru wars fought over the very ideals behind those beliefs - and we are looking to become something more, and find out what it is beyond the threshold, but never will.

And finally, it appears to be only a fairy tale, and the priest or whatever comes to send you off as you're dying, and then finally everything fades as your name is called into the oblivion.
