Conventional bulking diet guidelines will have you eating in at least a small calorie surplus and consuming at least a moderate amount of starchy carbs. Can the calorie surplus, the weight gain, and the higher carb intake put us at risk of developing insulin resistance? After all, a calorie surplus causes weight gain, weight gain is linked to insulin resistance and diabetes, and carbs cause us to produce more insulin.
Can skinny guys get insulin resistance? What about skinny-fat guys? And if we're at risk, what can we do to prevent insulin resistance?
To help me figure all of this out, I asked Dr. Karl Nadolsky, a board-certified endocrinologist who specializes in diseases like diabetes, and Danny Lennon, M.Sc., a prominent nutritionist on the advisory board of the sports nutrition association. Both of them were in full agreement, and both of them had interesting insights to add.
