Villa Monastero si trova sulla sponda orientale del Lago di Como, nel pittoresco borgo di Varenna. Varcata la soglia del portone si è invasi da una sensazione di quiete e benessere. Dall’esterno non si immagina la bellezza che ci aspetta oltre l’ingresso: si è abbagliati dalla luce, dall’azzurro del cielo e del lago e dal verde delle montagne.
L'edificio è inizialmente un monastero femminile cistercense fondato a fine XII secolo, che all'inizio del Seicento viene trasformato dalla famiglia Mornico e successivamente ristrutturato e decorato in stile eclettico in particolare tra il 1897 e il 1909 dal suo ultimo proprietario tedesco Walter Kees, che amplia inoltre il giardino. Nel 1936 la villa viene donata per diventare bene pubblico e museo tramite volere testamentario del proprietario, il naturalista milanese Marco De Marchi. Nel 1940 viene aperto al pubblico.
Il nucleo centrale è rappresentato dalla Casa Museo, questa è interamente accessibile al pubblico (14 sale). Dall'Ottocento la Villa è sempre stata abitata e frequentata da personaggi di spicco del panorama culturale e artistico italiano ed europeo (sembra sia stata visitata anche da Kennedy nell’estate del 1963).
In questa storica dimora lariana ha sede anche un Centro Convegni conosciuto a livello internazionale per le lezioni di fisica tenute nel 1954 dal Premio Nobel Enrico Fermi; ogni anno la Società Italiana di Fisica organizza qui i propri corsi.
il giardino di Villa Monastero è di fatto un Giardino botanico. Quest’ultimo ha origini piuttosto antiche, con la presenza di specie esotiche per il clima particolarmente mite; vi erano piante di olivo, vite, erbe aromatiche e medicinali già al tempo del monastero cistercense (fine XII secolo - 1567).
Walter Kee ampliò considerevolmente il giardino fino a raggiungere l’estensione attuale di quasi due chilometri, creando terrazzamenti a lago dove vennero inserite notevoli essenze esotiche e mediterranee, vanta la presenza di numerose e rare specie arboree autoctone ed esotiche; il giardino è stato mantenuto intatto nel suo aspetto: ricco di specie botaniche particolari e rare, disposte in terrazzamenti che favoriscono una sequenza di inquadrature sempre diverse. Grazie al clima particolarmente tipico del lago, convivono rarità botaniche provenienti da tutto il mondo, che vengono di anno in anno incrementate.

Villa Monastero is located on the eastern shore of Lake Como, in the picturesque village of Varenna. As soon as you cross the threshold of the door you are immediately invaded by a feeling of peace and well-being. From the outside, you cannot imagine the beauty that awaits us beyond the entrance: you are dazzled by the light, the blue of the sky and the lake and the green of the mountains.
The building is initially a Cistercian female monastery founded in the late twelfth century, which at the beginning of the seventeenth century was transformed by the Mornico family and subsequently renovated and decorated in an eclectic style, particularly between 1897 and 1909 by its last German owner Walter Kees, which also expands the garden. In 1936 the villa was donated to become a public property and museum through the will of the owner, the Milanese naturalist Marco De Marchi. In 1940 it was opened to the public.
The central nucleus is represented by the House Museum, this is entirely accessible to the public (14 rooms). Since the nineteenth century the Villa has always been inhabited and frequented by prominent personalities of the Italian and European cultural and artistic panorama (it seems that it was also visited by Kennedy in the summer of 1963).
In this historic Larian residence there is also a convention center known internationally for the physics lessons held in 1954 by the Nobel Prize winner Enrico Fermi; every year the Italian Physics Society organizes its courses here.
the garden of Villa Monastero is in fact a botanical garden. The latter has rather ancient origins, with the presence of exotic species due to the particularly mild climate; there were olive trees, vines, aromatic and medicinal herbs already at the time of the Cistercian monastery (late 12th century - 1567).
Walter Kee considerably enlarged the garden up to the current extension of almost two kilometers, creating terraces on the lake where they came and remarkable exotic and Mediterranean species, boasts the presence of numerous and rare native and exotic tree species; the garden has been kept intact in its aspect: rich in particular and rare botanical species, arranged in terraces that favor a sequence of always different shots. Thanks to the particularly typical climate of the lake, botanical rarities from all over the world coexist, which are increased year by year.
