Having marched North to answer Tostig and Hardrada's invading army, the Saxons, led by Harold Godwinson, assemble and prepare to do battle. They will meet them at the River Derwent, in a fateful clash of heroes, barbarians and kings that will be recounted throughout the ages. King Harold Godwinson promises Hardrada "six feet of ground, or as much more as he needs, as he is taller than most men."
VICTORY AT STAMFORD BRIDGE tells the tale of the end of the Viking Age, the last battle between Saxons and Vikings. Caught off-guard and by surprise, the unarmoured Norse army reeled against the overwhelming numbers of the Saxons. A single berserker held the crossing and bought the Vikings enough time to form their shield wall, before he was slain from below the bridge. Then the slaughter began as the Saxons swarmed over the bridge...
