THE REAL JESUS: JOHN'S GOSPEL | John

Описание: You know that moment with a toddler. Late afternoon. You pushed it too far. One more errand. One more stop. "Let's just run into Target real quick." Which nobody with a toddler has ever done. That's not a thing. But you said it anyway. And now the meltdown has begun. Crying over nothing. Mad about everything. And you know exactly what they need. A nap. The very thing that would fix everything is right there. But they won't stop fighting long enough to receive it. So you pick them up — and they go full ironing board. Back arched. Arms locked. It's like cuddling with a 2x4 with a diaper. We chuckle at their stubbornness, but the mirror is uncomfortable — because that's exactly how we treat the Shepherd's arms. The rest we're looking for is right there. And instead of collapsing into it, we stiffen our backs and fight the very arms trying to carry us.

Right into that very human condition, Jesus says something astonishing: "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of My hand." Comforting words. That almost gets Jesus killed. We're in John 10:22–42.

On the surface this looks like a debate — Jewish leaders surrounding Jesus, demanding answers, picking up stones. But underneath the confrontation, there is a God who will not let go.

*How It's Supposed To Be.* "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me." That's how human beings were created to live. Not independence. Not wandering. A Shepherd. A voice. A people who belong to Him. Eternal life in John's Gospel isn't just about duration — it's about connection. Being known by the One Who made you and held by the One Who has the power to never let go. No sheep HR department. No performance review. Just: you hear Him, you follow Him, He holds you. That's relational language. That's the language of belonging.

*How We Get It Wrong.* It's Hanukkah — a holiday about revolution. When they ask if He's the Messiah, they're not asking a theological question. They want another Maccabee to drive out Rome. Jesus says, "I told you, and you do not believe… you do not believe because you are not among my sheep." The problem isn't a lack of clarity. It's a lack of surrender. They want a Messiah on their terms. That's not a villain — that's just us. Unbelief isn't a question looking for an answer. It's a will looking for an excuse not to bend the knee.

*How Jesus Got It Right.* "I and the Father are one." The Father's unbreakable purpose. The Son's nail-scarred hands. No one gets through either. Even the best hands in this life eventually let go. My dad was a good man. Four kids who weren't even his. A couple years ago this week, he went to be with Jesus. We were holding his hands as he took his last breath. Good hands. Strong hands. But human hands. Right into that reality Jesus says something no human could ever promise: "No one will snatch them out of My hand." Not time. Not tragedy. Not death. Not your failures. Not your doubts. He will never expire. He will never lose His grip on you. Those hands were pierced precisely because He would not let go. The nails didn't force His hands open — they held them open. And the hands that stayed open on the cross are the same hands holding you right now.

*How Should We Respond.* Same Jesus. Different responses. Some reached for rocks. Many back home trusted the Shepherd. If you're not yet a believer — the issue is not that He hasn't been clear enough. What are you actually resisting? You'd be saying yes to a Shepherd Who is thirsty for your soul. Who stood in a crowd of people who wanted Him dead and kept reaching. Who went to the cross still thirsty. The fight is exhausting. And the arms are not going anywhere. Just stop handing Him vinegar. Let Him hold you.

To those who already belong to Him: Rest. Not "try harder to feel secure." Actually rest. Your security is not in your performance. It's in the grip of the One Who is one with the Father. When you finally stop white-knuckling your own life, you start noticing the people around you. The neighbor who's drowning. The coworker with that empty look. Jesus is still thirsty for them — and He put you in their zip code. You are held. And you are sent.

Are you still stiff-backed like that toddler? Still fighting the arms trying to carry you? Those hands were nailed open once — so they would never open again. The safest place in existence is in the hands that were pierced for you.

"I and the Father are one." That's not poetry. That's power. So stop fighting. Rest.
