‘William and Evelyn De Morgan’ The Arts and Crafts Movement, 3
William De Morgan took over tile production for William Morris and became the most innovative potter of the 19th century, rediscovering the secret of lustreware. Between 1877 and 1881, De Morgan collaborated with artist Walter Crane to reproduce copies of traditional tiles collected in the Middle East by Frederic, Lord Leighton. His later commissions included tile panels for P and O liners. De Morgan’s wife Evelyn, one of the first female students at the Slade School of Art, was a talented artist influenced by the approach of the Pre-Raphaelites. The De Morgan Foundation, a charity established in 1970, has items from its collection on show at Cannon Hall Museum, Cawthorne near Barnsley, and exhibitions at Watts Gallery - Artists’ Village, at Compton near Guildford, and at Wightwick Manor, a National Trust property near Wolverhampton.
