Bharathi Ramasubban is a Carnatic vocalist who was initiated into the music by her mother and grandmother. Her grandmother was a disciple of Harikesanallur Muthiah Bhagavatar, a famous Carnatic composer. She trained under Seetha Rajan and P S Narayanaswamy. Her music resonates with the grandeur of the Semmangudi bani and is rooted in tradition. Bharathi also has the good fortune to learn from Vidvan Sri R K Shriramkumar. Her focus on highlighting the sahithya (lyric) through the sangitha (music) reaffirms her conviction that they are not mutually exclusive. She is also passionate about Sanskrit literature, heritage, temple history and travel. She has authored articles on Sanskrit drama, its origins and ancient dramatists for Sruti, one of India’s premier magazines for the performing arts. Bharathi is a gold medalist in her Bachelors in Chemistry from Stella Maris College, Chennai. She holds a Masters degree in Biotechnological Law & Ethics from the School of Law, University of Sheffield, Sheffield, UK. She is an A-grade artiste of the All India Radio (AIR), Chennai. She has performed at several venues all over India and abroad. She is the recipient of a number of awards including the Kalki Krishnamurthy Memorial Award and won the outstanding Junior Vocalist Award at the Madras Music Academy in 2017.

In this krithi, Thyagaraja Swami expresses his deep devotion and longing for Lord Rama. He pleads with Rama, asking why he has not come to his rescue. He compares himself to an orphaned child and wonders why his repeated prayers have not been answered. With intense longing, he gazes upon the Lord’s face, his heart filled with devotion and sorrow.

Meaning:
O beloved Rama, Why do you not come to me? Why do you not allow me to be united with you?
You who are firm like Meru why then do you waver in coming to me? You who grant prosperity to all why withhold your grace from me? This is not fitting of you.
Just as a young married woman who has no mother or father depends entirely on and seeks only her husband, in the same way I repeatedly pray to You and beg for your protection, yet will you not come to protect me, O Lord praised by this Thyagaraja, even after seeing me melt in love as I meditate upon and yearn for your lotus-like face?
