In this house, the load of the roof is supported by a post-and-beam structure. These walls greatly reduce the amount of wood needed for the home. The straw bales are used for infill only and do not take any structural load. Some local building codes allow the load of the roof to sit directly on the straw bale walls. When this is the case, the straw bale walls are assembled first, and the roof is added later. There are pros and cons to both methods.
