A rubble trench foundation replaces the majority of the concrete with broken stone. This foundation is as sturdy as a conventional foundation. A rubble trench foundation in this house reduced the amount of concrete by more than 50% as compared to a typical foundation. The production of Portland cement generates approximately 7% of all greenhouse gasses on the planet—a fact not known to many people. Therefore, how and where this material was used in the building of this house received careful consideration.
