STORYLINE:
Mourners from across Cyprus flocked to Nicosia's Saint Barnabas Cathedral on Thursday to pay their respects to Archbishop Chrysostomos II, the late leader of the island nation's Orthodox Church.
The body of Chrysostomos, who died earlier this week at the age of 81, is lying in state in the cathedral until his funeral Saturday, which will be presided over by the leader of the world's Orthodox Christian faithful, Patriarch Bartholomew, on his first visit to Cyprus.
Not one to hold back from speaking his mind on everything from the ethnically divided country's complex politics to the state's finances, Chrysostomos upset many, but earned respect for his efforts to help those most in need.
U.S. President Joe Biden called Chrysostomos "a dedicated leader who never shied away from speaking up for the most vulnerable communities in Cyprus."
One local mourner, Naya Karaoglanyan, described the archbishop as "misunderstood."
"Now with his death, we learn new facts about his life, his work, the important work that he has offered and we thank him for the righteous work that he has done for our country, for our church all these years," she said.
Maria Xiourouppa and three friends traveled 25 miles to see the archbishop lying in state.
