"This carol has become something of a modern classic. Commissioned by King’s College Cambridge for the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols in 2000, it is another example of a perfect marriage between text and music. The poem by Dorothy L. Sayers develops the traditional magi story, imagining the visitors as a young man, an old man, and a man in his prime. Jonathan Dove’s musical response is by turns introspective, bold and, when the text requires it, sparkling!"
