The Urgent Call to Invest in Our Men and Communities
Written By Kendesi Mohammed
Our men are struggling with depression, anxiety, and other mental health challenges. And let’s not ignore the fact that many are being denied access to their children because of a broken court system.
Dearest men right now, who are fighting for their children, are spending thousands of dollars on lawyers just to gain access to them. Some of these men are extremely successful and want to remove their children from poverty. Unfortunately, the courts utilize status hearings, mediation, meetings with court negotiators, pre-trial dates, multiple trial dates, and other techniques to prevent these men from having access to their children. They want the man to give up.
The reality is that systemic politics control resources and household income. For years, cities like Washington DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Miami, and parts of California have been underfunded. Communities struggle with broken roads, potholes, and inadequate infrastructure.
Walk through the average Black community, and you’ll see miles of apartment complexes with no grocery stores, no malls, and no shopping centers. Even then, many single mothers do not have the resources to fully support their children’s education and growth.
A lot of men and women have seen their mothers struggle. But we are not talking about why those struggles exist. In other ethnic communities, homes are structured to motivate the family, to help build wealth, to provide stability, and to create opportunities and connections.
While Chinese, Indian, Hispanic, Middle Eastern, and white men are getting loans to build businesses, we are not. Yet we are expected to help build America and other nations across the world.
If a mother has a son and that son does not have access to loans, education, opportunities, and the ability to develop his business for generations to come, he will not be able to plant good seeds and reap the rewards.
Some men in our community cannot read, cannot write, cannot spell, do not have an ID, and struggle with serious mental health illnesses.
Black children are talented. They shine in music, fashion, film, nightlife, and entertainment. When you take away the father, you can do anything to their children. This is how the system is designed. This is why I am reaching out to the President of the United States, Congress, and City Hall across America. We have to start these conversations because reparations are due. Our people cannot systematically be defeated while other ethnicities flourish. The white man is receiving billions of dollars in loans and grants regardless of whether he succeeds or fails. And we all know that on the stock market, many are filing for bankruptcy or going out of business. Yet we are not given the same opportunities to flourish, and that is a big problem.
This is not about excuses. It is about holding our government accountable and making sure they distribute our tax dollars fairly.
This is more than just a set of problems. It is a call to action. We must address mental health for men, reform our courts, invest in communities, and create opportunities so every family has the tools to thrive.
