Open Letter to James Bond: On Gratitude and Public Service
James Bond,
It is important for you to reflect on the foundation of your success. According to your own words, it was the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) administration that transformed your life. They did this first through a scholarship that allowed you to study law at the University of Guyana and the Hugh Wooding Law School, and later by creating opportunities that allowed you to transition into entrepreneurship after retiring from law.
This raises critical questions:
1. Why did you join the APNU/AFC coalition?
2. Why did you work against Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo and Donald Ramotar?
If the people who opened doors for you, educated you, and gave you the opportunity to shine deserved loyalty, why did you not honor them in your political choices? True gratitude is shown not just in words but in action.
The Historical Context of Education in Guyana
Your story mirrors the broader history of Guyana’s investment in education under Forbes Burnham. Without his policies, leaders like Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, who studied in the Soviet Union at Patrice Lumumba People’s Friendship University from 1984 to 1990, may not have had the chance to pursue higher education abroad. Burnham’s vision of South-South cooperation, scholarships to socialist nations, and diversification of education opportunities enabled Guyanese students from modest backgrounds to access fields such as law, medicine, economics, engineering, and agriculture.
Without these policies:
• Bharrat Jagdeo would not have had the training that shaped him into an economist and future President of Guyana.
• You, James Bond, would not have had the scholarship opportunities that made it possible for you to become a lawyer.
History shows that these initiatives were designed to create opportunity for all Guyanese, especially those whose families could not afford higher education.
A Call for Accountability and Gratitude
James Bond, your education, career, and rise as a public figure were made possible by government programs and scholarships designed to empower Guyanese youth. Yet, by aligning with parties or movements that worked against the very leaders and institutions that invested in you, you have, in the eyes of many, turned your back on the people who paved your path.
It is not just about politics. It is about integrity, loyalty, and honoring those who believe in you when no one else could. An apology or at least a public acknowledgment of this debt would not weaken you. It would strengthen your credibility, remind the people of your roots, and honor the nation that nurtured your potential.
