Here’s how:
Don’t believe anyone who offers a quick fix. And don’t trust companies that say they can help fix your credit, but only if you pay them first. It’s illegal for them to ask you to pay upfront.

Don’t believe anyone who promises to repair your credit by removing accurate information from your credit report. That’s illegal — especially if they tell you to dispute a debt you know is yours and you’ve been paying back over time.

If a company tells you to file a false identity theft report about a debt you owe, stop. Filing a false identity theft report is a crime.

If a credit repair company can do something legally, you can do it yourself for free. So learn more at ftc.gov/creditrepair.
