(21 Jan 2017) British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson ended his two-day visit to Myanmar on Saturday with a visit to the Shwedagon pagoda in Yangon, the holiest Buddhist temple in the country.
It has become the traditional final stop for visiting ministers.
Johnson walked barefoot round the huge temple complex, pausing to pour water on statues, and to ring a large bell.
In the course of his visit to the country, Johnson met with Myanmar's leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
In a tweet he said he held "very positive" talks with her on UK support for economic reforms, trade and human rights.
He said he also raised the issue of the situation in Rakhine State, where 65,000 Muslims have fled across the border to Bangladesh to escape an anti-insurgent security sweep by the military that has drawn strong criticism from the UN and from fellow ASEAN member, Malaysia.
The Shwedagon Pagoda was built 2,500 years ago. The main stupa stands 110 metres (361 feet) high.
