The Vermont Supreme Court ruled that same-sex couples should have the same benefits and protections as opposite-sex couples under Vermont law. The court found that denying same-sex couples access to a civil marriage license violates the Vermont Constitution. The court left it to the Legislature to decide how to extend these benefits, either through marriage laws or a parallel domestic partnership system.
