Pro Res Zoom. Super Res Zoom. 100x Zoom! Google just dropped the new Pixel 10 and 10 Pro, and the camera conversation is getting... a little confusing.
What is the actual difference between Pro Res Zoom and Super Res Zoom?
How does this new 100x zoom really work?
And which one should you be using?

What is Super Res Zoom?
To really understand what’s happening, we have to start with the basics of how zoom on any smartphone works.
First, we'll talk about Optical Zoom, which is the best-case scenario.
A real telephoto lens will actually physically magnify the image, giving you a crisp, clear shot with no quality loss.
When you're using the Pixel 10 Pro, that gets you up to 5x.
But what about those times when you need to go beyond a 5x zoom?
That referred to as Digital Zoom, which is basically just cropping your photo and blowing it up.
Google actually gave this a name on their Pixel phones, and you've probably already heard it before.
It’s called Super Res Zoom.
Super Res Zoom has been the secret sauce in Google's smartphones since the Pixel 3.
It's a clever way to get more detail out of a digital zoom.
Its goal is to fight that ugly pixelation look.
Instead of taking just one photo, it captures a burst of them.
And when combining that, with the tiny, natural movements of your hand, it actually getting slightly different angles of your subject.
Then, the phone’s processor intelligently merges all the data from those shots so that it can create a single, higher-resolution image.
The key takeaway is that every piece of information in that photo was actually captured by your camera's sensor.
It's like a super-smart stitch job.
But with the Pixel 10 Pro, Google is introducing a brand new, and completely different, technology for zooming.
And they're calling it Pro Res Zoom so that you know there's a difference.
Pro Res Zoom is Google’s new method for achieving that headline-grabbing 100x zoom.
And at its core, it is generative AI.
This is a totally new way of taking photos with your smartphone.
Instead of just stitching together data it captured, Pro Res Zoom uses an on-device AI model to create new details that it thinks should be there.
It looks at your blurry, zoomed-in photo and actually uses it as a prompt.
It asks its AI brain, "Based on millions of training images, what should a high-resolution version of this blurry truck look like?"
Here's an example that was uploaded to social media by Google themselves.
It starts out showing you the AI generated version of the blue truck. . .
but then starts zooming out. . .to show just how far away it actually is from the Pixel 10 Pro.
So you've got two very different tools here: the multi-frame realism of Super Res Zoom, and the AI-generated detail of Pro Res Zoom.
I'm curious—which style do you prefer? Which one do you think you'd use more often? Let me know in the comments below!
Okay, so now that you know the difference, let's talk about how you can control this on your new Pixel.
This gives YOU the creative control. You get one version using the new Pro Res Zoom AI and one using the classic Super Res Zoom. You can compare them right in your gallery and decide which one looks better for that specific shot. Maybe you prefer the AI's clarity for a building, but the natural look of Super Res for a picture of an animal. You get to choose.
But what if you're a purist and you decide you only want to use the classic Super Res Zoom method? Well, you can do that too.
You can go into your camera settings and turn Pro Res Zoom off completely.
When Pro Res Zoom is off, your Pixel phone will revert to using Super Res Zoom for all digital zoom levels beyond the optical zoom range.
This will make your phone behave just like older Pixels, relying only on Super Res Zoom. Just be aware of one trade-off: if you disable it, your zoom will be capped at 30x. That 100x capability is directly tied to the Pro Res Zoom feature being turned on.
You not only know the difference between Pro Res and Super Res Zoom, but now you know exactly how to control them to get the shot you want on your new Google Pixel 10 Pro series.
Don't get me wrong. . .when the stars align and it works well. . .the results look unbelievable.
But more often than not, I suspect it will be ignored and forgotten about.
