The Buddha is said to have conquered Māra when on the night of his Awakening. Later Buddhists enumerate four kinds of Māra: Kleśa-māra, Mṛtyu-māra, Skandha-māra, and Devaputra-māra. Later, Nāgārjuna would say all of these are nothing other than the 5 Skandhas, which Dōgen also endorsed. In this talk, Shōhaku Okumura will look at how it can be said that the Buddha conquered death when he was awakened. In the process, he looks at Pali sources as well as excerpts of Dōgen's chapter of the Shōbōgenzo entitled Shōji ("Life-and-death").
