Here you go guys! The first two sessions of my genuinely green young horse Nardando (Hengstenhouderij Reilink) learning how to move sideways.
We start by moving along the wall in a kind of moving on the bias form of leg yield to teach him the meaning of moving away from the leg. Then we go to a line-to-line leg yield before attempting turns on the forehand. These exercises are all basically the same aid but in different positions around the arena.
This is REAL LIFE, this is complete with the wobbles, the bobbles, the confused "I don't get it" moments. This is what educating young horses really looks like. There are times when he loses his balance and goes behind the vertical or above the bit but as I explain I'm not worried about his frame, I need only enough rein contact for the conversation that controls his shoulder and keeps him mentally with me on task. The act of moving the hindleg under the midline of the body will help him to relax and lengthen his topline as he understands more.
Of course, it would have been easier for me to have made this video using Fairuza, my established advanced horse, showing the horse understanding every step, being fluent and balanced but that's not how life is in the early stages. It wouldn't be a genuine representation of the work.
Nardando is wearing;
