As the last stop on our journey through Greece and the Balkans, and the 16th episode of the series, we continue our journey on the mainland with a visit to the capital of Northern Macedonia, Skopje. As you can see, with its huge modern buildings, the city is quite surprising. We visited the home (a memorial) of Mother Teresa and we also got lost in the streets of its bazaar! We then visited the site of the ancient city of Stobi before returning to Thessaloniki, where we had to catch a plane to...Santorini! Enjoy!

Skopje:
Skopje is the capital and largest city of Northern Macedonia. Located in the heart of the Balkans, in the north of the country near the border with Kosovo, the city is built on the banks of the Vardar River. Skopje is home to some 550,000 people, a quarter of the country's total population, including a large Albanian minority, as well as Turkish and Roma communities.

After various prehistoric settlements, Skopje really came into being in the 1st century with the foundation of a Roman colony called “Scupi”, which became part of the Eastern Roman Empire in 395. The ancient city was destroyed by an earthquake in 518. Rebuilt and fortified a few kilometers further on, it suffered numerous invasions during the 10th and 11th centuries, becoming Bulgarian for a few years. Byzantine domination ended with the Serbian conquest in 1282, and Skopje became capital of the Serbian Empire in 1346. The state quickly weakened, however, and the city was conquered by the Ottomans in 1392. The city then became predominantly Muslim.

In the 17th century, Skopje was one of the largest cities in the Balkans, but it was burnt down in 1689 during the Second Austro-Turkish War and subsequently declined until the mid-19th century. The opening of a railroad brought some population growth, and Skopje became the capital of the Kosovo vilayet in 1877. It reverted to Serbian rule in 1912, became part of Yugoslavia in 1918 and became independent in 1991.

Stobi:
Stobi is an ancient town in Peonia, a region of northern Macedonia located on the left bank of the Erigon (now Tsrna), not far from its confluence with the Axios (now Vardar). Around 150 km north of Thessalonica and 80 km south of Skopje, Stobi occupied an important position as a lock in the Vardar valley, on the strategic axis linking the Aegean Sea to the Danube basin, as indicated by Artemidorus, quoted by Strabo. Stobi enjoyed a particularly favorable position, which explains its prosperity and military importance when the Thessalonica-Sirmium axis became vital for this part of the Roman Empire.

This importance explains the rapid Romanization of the Macedonian town. Under Emperor Augustus, Stobi became an oppidum civium Romanorum, i.e. a Roman community large enough to enjoy certain political privileges. It was undoubtedly under the reign of the same Augustus that it became municipium Stobensium, and, like Philippi, enjoyed the ius Italicum. Capital of Macedonia Salutaris, and undoubtedly of Second Macedonia from the 5th century onwards. Hard hit by the invasion of Theodoric's Ostrogoths in 482, it fell victim to an earthquake in 518, and never recovered from these disasters: it is thought to have been abandoned towards the end of the 6th century.
