Our first stop in the Greek islands takes us back to Greece with this 17th episode in Santorini. It is undoubtedly one of the most famous islands in the world and is also a somewhat over-touristed destination. But the archipelago has a volcanic island at its centre and is an exceptional place for anyone who loves to travel. The black cliffs of the caldera contrast with the island's white buildings with blue roofs. Today, we will visit the capital Fira, go to Red Beach and end the day with a sunset (with too many people) in Oia. Enjoy!

Fira Thira (Φηρά Θήρας): the capital
Fira is the capital of the Santorini archipelago and also its most populous village. It is here that you will find the most activity and the liveliest atmosphere. On Santorini, everything revolves around Fira, and staying here guarantees access to many activities, easy transportation, and, in general, the most possibilities. As a bonus, Fira has picture-perfect views!

The economic hub of the island, Fira is now home to around 2,500 year-round residents. It is always busy, day and night, and modern life is very much in evidence. Tourists flock to the narrow streets and shopping streets near the corniche and in the historic centre. In summer, bars and restaurants are always full, and those offering views of the caldera are always packed (and can afford to charge much higher prices). But Fira also has quieter streets, beautiful churches and a few museums.

Red Beach:
Santorini's Red Beach is by far one of the most unique beaches in Greece and one of the most exceptional landscapes in the world. It is one of the main attractions and activities to do in Santorini, and it is located very close to the famous village of Akrotiri and its prehistoric ruins (literally a few steps away).

Oia and its sunsets:
The clichéd view of Santorini with beautiful white houses clustered on the cliffside overlooking the Aegean Sea is almost certainly Oia. In fact, only a few places on the main island of Santorini have this unique feature, and it is these dreamlike views that travellers come to see: the sunsets of Santorini? Oia! The white houses with two windmills? Oia! The infinity pools facing the sea? Oia again!

From 2,500 inhabitants in 1890 to only 300 at the end of the 1970s, Oia now has more than 600 year-round residents who live mainly from tourism.
