When gasoline is stored for long periods of time, it can become difficult to start an engine. The gas can oxidize and form gums that plug fuel filters, carburetors, and fuel injectors. The ethanol in gasoline can absorb water, causing phase separation, which can make starting the engine almost impossible. A third problem is evaporation. The most volatile hydrocarbons in gas can evaporate, and as they are necessary to easily ignite the fuel, it can become very difficult to start your engine.
In this video, I demonstrate how a volume of gas that had been stored in a vented lawn mower all summer loses these highly volatile hydrocarbons, as compared to the same volume of gas that had been stored in a sealed gas can and protected from evaporation.
In this experiment, the gas that had been stored in the lawn mower had already lost the highly volatile hydrocarbons, or "light ends", through evaporation over a hot Los Angeles summer. The gas that had been stored in the gas can still had these light ends, and once exposed to the air, evaporates at a faster pace.
