Ramadan Night 19 | The Making of an Ummah: Why a Just Society Must Feed the Poor

Описание: When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ first entered Madinah, he laid down the foundations of a civilization with a few profound words:

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ أَفْشُوا السَّلَامَ وَأَطْعِمُوا الطَّعَامَ وَصِلُوا الْأَرْحَامَ وَصَلُّوا بِاللَّيْلِ وَالنَّاسُ نِيَامٌ تَدْخُلُوا الْجَنَّةَ بِسَلَامٍ

“O people, spread peace, feed others, maintain family ties, and pray at night while people are asleep, and you will enter Paradise in peace.”

On Night 19 of our Ramadan series “The Making of an Ummah,” we explore the second foundation of that prophetic blueprint:

وأطعموا الطعام – Feed people.

A society can have peace, law, and stability, yet still be cruel if it abandons its weakest members. Islam builds something different. It establishes a society where the vulnerable are not left behind, but are structurally protected through justice, compassion, and responsible systems of care.

Through the guidance of the Qur’an and the example of the Prophet ﷺ, this talk explores how Islam addresses poverty and inequality through:

• Zakah and the redistribution of wealth
• Sadaqah and voluntary generosity
• Ethical economic systems that prevent exploitation
• A culture of dignity in helping the poor

The Qur’an describes the righteous believers in Surah al-Insan:

وَيُطْعِمُونَ الطَّعَامَ عَلَىٰ حُبِّهِ مِسْكِينًا وَيَتِيمًا وَأَسِيرًا

“They feed food, out of love for it, to the poor, the orphan, and the captive.” (76:8)

And it warns us in Surah al-Ma‘un that neglecting the vulnerable reflects a deeper spiritual failure:

أَرَأَيْتَ الَّذِي يُكَذِّبُ بِالدِّينِ
فَذَٰلِكَ الَّذِي يَدُعُّ الْيَتِيمَ
وَلَا يَحُضُّ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ الْمِسْكِينِ

“Have you seen the one who denies the religion? That is the one who repels the orphan and does not encourage feeding the poor.” (107:1–3)

This reflection also looks at the extraordinary generosity of the Ansar and Muhajirun, whose brotherhood created the society that would go on to produce the believers of Badr.
