(13 Dec 2016) Winning Aleppo was important but it wasn't the end of the war for Syrian President Bashar Assad, an analyst said on Tuesday.
Retired Lebanese army general Hisham Jaber, now a political analyst and chairman of The Middle East Centre for Studies and Public Relations in Beirut, said that Aleppo was one of three major pillars of a unified Syria.
Jaber said that if Damascus, Latakia and Aleppo were controlled by a single regime then Syria would not break up.
But he said winning the battle of Aleppo didn't mean that Assad would win the war.
Jaber said there was still a long way to go for the Assad regime to defeat the opposition, given that large parts of Syria were still in the hands of rebel groups.
The Syrian army and its allies said they are in control of 99 percent of Aleppo on Tuesday.
Retaking Aleppo would be Assad's biggest victory yet in the civil war.
