Shelling is a lot of fun, especially when you know what to look for. I help you learn and identify shells you might find if you visit Southwest Florida. I'm normally walking miles and miles of beach, but on this trip my friend and I used kayaks to get over to a couple of huge sand bars and an island off Marco Island, Florida.
I was hoping to find a Junonia or maybe a big ol' conch however it seems like us shellers are pretty serious about shelling, so even though we were on a sand bar, we were running into other shellers. I even ran into someone who recognized my voice from my YouTube videos, which was cool.
Shelling Gulf Coast beaches is awesome! I am originally from NJ, so I grew up thinking the ocean was always cold and rough. Not down here! The gulf waters are usually really calm and in the summer the water gets really warm - it took my brain quite a while to really understand the gulf water was warm. There are some days it's not welcome because it can get pretty hot here in the summer but that's what swimming pools are for :)
