(8 Feb 2022) Artists in Lima have finalized a giant mural covering an entire neighborhood in the San Cristobal Hill in the Peruvian capital.
Artists took inspiration from pre-Incan patterns, featuring 'Chakanas,' a mythological sign to connect worlds.
"That invites us to connect between neighbors and improve our quality of life in the neighborhood," said Carla Magan, an artist from the 'Energy Color' collective.
Over nine months, designers painted each of the more than 1,000 houses in San Cristobal to make a giant mural that can be seen across the city. They call it Project Rainbow.
The 'Energy Color' artistic collective, whose members reside in San Cristobal, said they wanted to bring a new look to what is perceived as a dangerous area of Lima.
The restoration and painting works were funded by the municipality of Lima and a private painting company, which believe it could create jobs and a sense of belonging among the residents.
Hills in Lima, settled on an arid seaside, are composed mostly of desert sand.
People migrating from remote towns in Peru settled in these areas during the last decades, with their houses left without painting with the gray and brown materials exposed.
The Lima municipality aimed to refurbish the facades of houses for at least 10,000 residents.
