STORYLINE:
Thousands crowded Saturday the outside of Lima's National Sanctuary and Monastery of Las Nazarenas to participate in the Lord of Miracles procession.
The Lord of Miracles Brotherhood carried the image.
That famous Peruvian faithful congregation has about 5,000 members, the only ones allowed to hold and carry the "Brown Christ" image.
The procession venerates a 17th-century rendering of Jesus Christ painted by a slave from Angola.
"(The Lord of Miracles) is an image of Christ that was painted by a slave several centuries ago. The image endured several earthquakes. That is why it began to be venerated, and many people started to have great faith in it and started to take it out in procession." told Francisco Toledo, a brotherhood member.
The replica crossing Lima's streets is estimated to weigh nearly 2 tons.
