🛠️ Upper Drive Roll Spindle Replacement (JD 457 Baler)
The upper drive roll spindle supports the top drive roll that the main drive chain wraps around and transfers power to the belt system. Over time, these spindles can wear, especially under tension from chain slop or bearing failure.
✅ We removed the chain and shield assembly
✅ Pulled the old spindle using a manual press
✅ Installed the new spindle, ensuring correct alignment and bearing fit
✅ Re-tensioned the main drive chain and greased all fittings
This is a critical wear point in the baler — loose chain or drive noise could point to this exact issue.
🔧 Trailer Tire Repair – Inside Patch with Heat Activation
Next up, we repaired a trailer tire that had a small puncture. Instead of a plug, we went inside the tire with a patch, using a traditional method:
✅ Removed the tire using our vintage manual tire machine — still works, but it needs a new belt!
✅ Cleaned and scuffed the inside of the tire
✅ Applied vulcanizing cement
✅ Lit the glue with a lighter — this old-school method makes the glue stickier and helps the patch bond better under pressure
✅ Applied the patch, rolled it down, and reinstalled the tire manually
This method has been used for decades and still works great in a pinch — especially when you're working without a full tire shop setup.
