What begins as a discussion of historic flood control quickly becomes something more complex: a look at aging levees, pump stations dating to the 1940s, and the reality that much of our flood protection infrastructure has exceeded its intended lifespan.

One striking example: Northampton’s primary pump station still relies on repurposed 1940 tugboat engines installed after the 1936 flood. During a 2023 storm event, two pumps went offline and a third nearly failed — a reminder that infrastructure built in response to one generation’s disaster must eventually confront another’s.
This interview frames the issue as “A Tale of Two Cities” — two communities divided by a river, facing different vulnerabilities, but bound by the same hydrology.

The discussion avoids partisan politics while addressing governance, funding, and long-term planning — focusing instead on civic awareness and informed citizenship.
