STORYLINE
Hundreds of Greek Orthodox believers were filling the courtyard of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre Thursday.
They were there to watch an ancient Easter tradition midway through Holy Week.
Patriarch Theofilos III washed the feet of a few priests.
The ceremony is a re-enactment of Jesus' act of humility. According to Christian belief, he had washed the feet of his 12 Apostles in Jerusalem some two thousand years ago.
As the Orthodox gathered outside, Roman Catholics were holding a similar ceremony inside the church, presided over by Latin Patriarch Fuad Twal. Nuns and priests packed the church, which is revered by believers as the site of Jesus' crucifixion, burial and resurrection.
Elsewhere in the Old City, not far away, Jews had congregated at the Western Wall, a key site for them. It's a retaining wall of the Jewish Temple compound of Biblical times. The crowd had gathered to receive a priestly blessing, those delivering it in Hebrew had covered their heads in white prayer shawls.

The crowds were bigger in the Old City and security even heavier than usual. In a rare concurrence this year, the Jewish Passover holiday and Latin and Orthodox Easter are all falling in the same period.
