In this session of our Evergetinos (Evergetinos / Gerontikon) study (Volume 2), we begin Hypothesis 31 on dreams—especially how to respond to tempting or disturbing dreams, including nocturnal emissions, without falling into fear, scrupulosity, or obsessive analysis. The Fathers consistently teach: do not give undue attention to dreams, and when you awaken, do not replay passionate images in the mind. Instead, turn quickly to prayer, guard the senses, and pursue the virtues that protect the heart.
We read from the Fathers including Abba Isaiah, St. Maximus the Confessor, and others, highlighting how spiritual warfare may exploit fear and memory—but also how love and temperance make the soul stable whether awake or asleep.
Then we transition into the next major theme: the great work of contrition. With St. Gregory the Dialogist, we explore the two essential kinds of contrition: first, contrition born from fear of sin and judgment; and later, a deeper contrition born from desire—a sorrow of love that weeps because it longs for the Kingdom and beholds (even dimly) the beauty of God, the choirs of angels, and the joy of the saints. This is repentance not as despair, but as a spiritual beauty that heals the heart and draws it toward God.
