The Evergetinos Vol. 2: Two Hypothesis XXXII, Part II - Gift of Tears & Contrition: Fear vs Love

Описание: Christ is risen. Indeed, He is risen! Welcome back to our study of The Evergetinos (Vol. 2) as we continue Hypothesis 32 on contrition (compunction)—the mourning for sin that paradoxically becomes a source of consolation, healing, and a deeper desire for God.

In this session (p. 241, Section A), we explore the striking image of “land watered from above and below” as a symbol for the gift of tears and the two kinds of contrition:

contrition from fear of eternal punishment (watered from below), and

contrition from longing for the Kingdom of Heaven (watered from above), which the Fathers call the greater gift.

We then move into powerful selections from St. Ephraim the Syrian, who teaches that the beginning of contrition is true self-knowledge rooted in humility—not outward show, not performative piety, but a hidden mourning before God who sees the heart. Ephraim’s prayers reveal how repentance becomes confidence in God as Physician of souls, and how humility disarms the enemy’s accusations—especially at the hour of death.

We also hear from Abba Isaiah, who describes the interior reality of a soul awakened to judgment: the sobering clarity that cuts off judgment of others, softens the heart, and plants the “seed” of hope in God’s mercy. The discussion touches on the communion of saints, spiritual warfare, and why contrition is not despair—but the doorway into mercy.
