A routine to balance and strengthen the stomach and spleen meridians, which also govern the pancreas.
SWINGING ARMS
A wonderful warmup exercise. Let the arms be relaxed so they swing out with the turn of the waist. Loose fists knock on the belly and lower back, then on the lung points at the front of the shoulders.
TRACING THE STOMACH AND SPLEEN MERIDIANS
Tracing meridians is a good way to improve their flow.
The stomach meridian runs from under the eyes, down, up and around the face, then down the neck to the collarbones. It comes out at the chest, in at the waist, out at the hips then all the way down the legs and off the second toe.
The spleen meridian runs from the big toe up the inside of the legs then out over the hips. It continues up the sides of the body to the underarms, then down again to the bottom of the ribcage.
SHAKING
Try to loosen and relax all the joints and muscles as you shake, so that even habitual tensions can release.
ROTATE THE WAIST LIKE A BEAR
From Five Animal qigong, these bear movements stretch and massage the centre of the torso, where our digestive organs are located.
It's also a lovely release for the lower back, but do make sure you don't lean back too far.
Put your hands into loose fists and press them comfortably into the belly. The rotation of the waist then moves the fists, so that you are giving yourself a relaxing massage as they move around the abdomen.
Only lean back a little as the fists come up to massage under the ribcage.
SWAY LIKE A BEAR
Again from five animal qigong, this stretches and twists the waist and upper belly. Again, stay within your comfortable limits.
Stand with feet fairly wide apart, so that you can still keep a soft bend in both knees.
Turn one foot out. The loosely held fist on the same side comes forward, as the body turns to face the front and the weight comes onto the front leg.
Then slowly shift the weight to the back leg as the opposite fist comes forward and the torso turns to face backwards.
There's a lovely twisting, stretching rhythm to this move.
WAVE HANDS LIKE CLOUDS
The classic tai chi move to clear and balance the energy in the digestive organs.
Keep your shoulders relaxed.
Most of the sideways movement comes from the turn of the waist. The hands exchange places but remain centred on the torso as it moves from side to side.
CONNECTING HEAVEN AND EARTH
Breathe out and expand upwards as the hands separate and the palms turn to connect to heavenly energy and earth energy.
Inhale and sink your energy back inwards as they cross.
Again there is a lovely rhythmic stretch and release through the middle of the torso.
CONNECT TO THE EARTH
These are the earth element meridians. Imagine your palms are connecting to the energy of the earth beneath your feet - solid, supportive, nurturing.
BRINGING DOWN THE HEAVENS
Inhale as the hands rise to gather chi from the sky, and exhale as you bring it showering down the body and into the earth.
COMPLETION
One hand over the other on the belly, as the benefits of our practice are absorbed back into the system.
Thanks for practising with me! Wishing you an excellent rest of the day.
