The events in Joshua 1–4 mark the beginning of Israel's entry into the Promised Land after Moses' death and 40 years of wilderness wandering following the Exodus from Egypt.
Biblical chronology (based on 1 Kings 6:1, placing the Exodus ~1446 BC) dates the crossing of the Jordan River to around 1406 BC.
Many conservative scholars support an early date (~15th–14th century BC) for these events.
Mainstream archaeological and historical scholarship often places the broader Israelite settlement in Canaan during the late 13th century BC (Iron Age I transition), viewing the conquest narrative as theological rather than strictly historical, with limited direct evidence for a rapid military takeover.
Summary of Joshua Chapters 1–4
These opening chapters describe the transition from Moses' leadership to Joshua's, preparations for entering Canaan, and the miraculous crossing of the Jordan River, establishing God's faithfulness as Israel begins possessing the Promised Land.
Chapter 1: Joshua Commissioned as Leader
After Moses' death, God commissions Joshua to lead Israel across the Jordan into the land promised to Abraham's descendants. God promises to be with Joshua as He was with Moses, urging him repeatedly to "be strong and courageous" and to meditate on the Book of the Law for success. Joshua instructs the people to prepare provisions, and he reminds the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh (settled east of the Jordan) of their obligation to help conquer the land west of the river. The people affirm their loyalty to Joshua.
Chapter 2: Spies Sent to Jericho and Rahab's Faith
Joshua secretly sends two spies from Shittim to scout Jericho. They stay at the house of Rahab, a prostitute, who hides them from the king of Jericho after learning of Israel's God and His mighty acts (e.g., parting the Red Sea). Rahab confesses faith in the Lord as the true God and asks for mercy for her family. The spies promise to spare her household if she marks her home with a scarlet cord and keeps their mission secret. She helps them escape, and they report back that the inhabitants of Canaan are terrified of Israel.
Chapter 3: Crossing the Jordan Begins
The people break camp and move to the Jordan's edge. God instructs Joshua that the priests carrying the ark of the covenant should lead, promising to exalt Joshua before Israel. As soon as the priests' feet touch the flooded river, God miraculously stops the waters upstream (at Adam, near Zarethan), creating dry ground for the nation to cross. This echoes the Red Sea parting, confirming God's presence.
Chapter 4: Memorial Stones and Completion of the Crossing
God commands Joshua to have one man from each of the 12 tribes take a stone from the riverbed to set up as a memorial at their camp (Gilgal), so future generations will remember God's miracle and fear Him. Joshua also sets up 12 stones in the middle of the Jordan where the priests stood. The priests with the ark exit last, and the waters return once they reach the bank. About 40,000 armed men cross, and the event glorifies God, showing Joshua's leadership is divinely backed.
These chapters emphasize themes of obedience, courage, God's faithfulness to His promises, and miraculous intervention as Israel steps into inheritance.
