Why Mount Rainier Is Considered the Most Dangerous U.S. Volcano

#### 1. *Lahar Hazards*

The greatest threat from Mount Rainier is the potential for lahars—fast-moving volcanic mudflows composed of water, rock, and debris. These can be triggered by volcanic activity or by the collapse of water-saturated slopes, and they can travel rapidly down river valleys, endangering communities downstream. #### 2. *Glacial Ice and Hydrothermal Alteration*

Mount Rainier has an extensive glacial system, with 25 major glaciers containing more snow and ice than all other Cascade volcanoes combined.
