Nigeria’s 2026 Appropriation Bill has raised fresh concerns after allocating less than 1% of the ₦58 trillion national budget to poverty alleviation programmes, despite rising living costs and widespread economic hardship. With more than 133 million Nigerians reported to be living in multidimensional poverty, critics question whether the budget reflects the country’s social realities or development needs. On this programme, we examine what the low allocation means for vulnerable households, how it compares with previous budgets, and whether existing poverty reduction efforts have delivered results. Founder of the Sesor Empowerment Foundation, Ier Jonathan-Ichaver, joins the conversation to assess the implications and possible policy alternatives.
