Making an Elder Bow. We Need to Talk Shortening & Heat Straightening the Bow Part 3. After much work on my elder stave I am almost ready to start work tillering the bow so I fit the tillering string. But I am overcome by disappointment - I gently flex the bow and it already feels unwieldy. Maybe it is too long? I have been concerned about the bow's length all the way - it was 74" simply because that was a length that allowed me to get a string line roughly down the centre of the wiggly bow stave. Any shorter and I would need to heat- straighten the limbs to enable me to fit a string. But in the end, I realised I had no choice - so I shortened the bow to 68" and set about heat-straightening the limbs in the hope of bringing the string down the bow's middle. Did it work?
Part four to follow.
