A rapid uptick in usage of major social media platforms by locals has seen India emerge as one of the largest user bases of online denizens in recent years. The same period has also seen the emergence of a diverse range of malicious actors seeking to leverage the popularity of social media amongst locals as a means of achieving their personal, commercial and political goals. The DFRLab unmasks one such unscrupulous private actor, Press Monitor International, a Toronto-based PR firm that built websites impersonating domestic news outlets that engaged in fact-checking to disseminate and promote pro-government narratives online.
