Описание: Adjective Order | The Unspoken Rule Followed by ALL Native Speakers!

In the English language, there is an unspoken rule in regard to the sequence of adjectives when two or more of them are used before a noun. For most native English speakers, this rule is followed unknowingly. We do not know why the big, red house sounds better than the red, big house—it just does. For non-native English speakers, this sequence is not as obvious. If non-native English speakers use these adjectives out of this unspoken order, it sounds a bit strange to native English speakers. It is not wrong to use adjectives out of this order, it just sounds a bit more natural when this order is used. As your English improves you will begin to use this order without thinking about which comes first or second, etc. Listening to native English conversation and reading English texts will help you to familiarize yourself with this order.

This is the order of adjectives in English:

1. Number/ determiner
2. Opinion
3. Size
4. Age
5. Shape
6. Color
7. Pattern
8. Origin
9. Material
10. Purpose/Type

Examples:

I saw a large, gray, African elephant. (opinion, color, origin)

He wore a hideous, leopard print, spandex shirt. (opinion, pattern, material)

She was a talented, twenty-year-old, Russian, ballet dancer. (opinion, age, origin, type)

In this video, we will learn the order of adjectives in English!
