The chapter records real social tension—fear, exposure, and a public order of protection—and describes prosperity that triggers envy. The conflict becomes visible in the wells: the Philistines stop them up; Isaac digs again, and the well-names preserve the path: contention, opposition, and finally Rehoboth, where the text interprets the moment as “now the LORD has made room for us.” The chapter closes with altar-building, calling on the LORD’s name, and covenant language with Abimelech.
