In this episode, the text moves in three major arcs:

(1) Sodom and Lot’s escape (Genesis 19)
From the city gate to the morning flight, the chapter records Sodom’s collapse: the messengers bring Lot out, the overthrow is described with “sulfur and fire,” and the narrator highlights a decisive line of continuity: God remembered Abraham and brought Lot out of the midst of destruction. The chapter closes by naming the sons born through Lot’s daughters—Moab and Ben-ammi—as origins of later peoples.

(2) Gerar and Abimelech (Genesis 20)
Abraham sojourns in the South and again speaks of Sarah as his sister. Abimelech is warned in a night dream, the matter is addressed before his servants, and Sarah is restored with fear and accountability. The narrative closes with intercession: Abraham prays, and Abimelech’s household is healed.

(3) Isaac’s birth, Hagar’s departure, and covenant testimony at Beersheba (Genesis 21)
The chapter opens with exact fulfillment: the LORD visits Sarah, and Isaac is born “at the set time.” Then the text records the separation of Hagar and Ishmael and provision in the wilderness, where God hears the voice of the boy and opens Hagar’s eyes to a well. The closing section features covenant arrangements with Abimelech at Beersheba (formal testimony) and Abraham calling on the LORD as El Olam, the Everlasting God.
