Hakim ibn Hizam (R)
Today, we reflect on a man who lived long enough to witness both worlds — the days before Islam… and the light after it.
This episode focuses on the defining quality of Hakim ibn Hizam (R): generosity guided by sincerity.
Before Islam, he was known among Quraysh for his generosity.
He would free slaves, support the poor, and help those in need.
But all of it was done before he accepted Islam.
Later in life, when he embraced Islam, a question weighed on his heart.
“What about all the good I did before Islam? Does it still count?”
He asked the Prophet ﷺ.
The answer was filled with mercy.
“You have accepted Islam upon the good you did before.”
From that moment, Hakim ibn Hizam (R) continued his generosity —
but now with faith, sincerity, and purpose.
Yet he carried another powerful trait.
He chose dignity over dependency.
After accepting Islam, he made a firm decision:
He would never ask anyone for anything.
Even when he was given wealth from the public treasury, he accepted it only when it came without asking.
And when he had enough, he would give it away again.
Hakim ibn Hizam (R) reminds us that true generosity is not just in giving…
but in giving with sincerity, and living with dignity before Allah.
