STORYLINE
The Pakistani military said it killed at least 10 suspected militants when they fired on two trucks and two cars on Thursday carrying suspected militants fleeing the bombing of a military convoy in North Waziristan.
Pakistan's army spokesman said army helicopters chased the militants on Thursday into a petrol station.
Between 10 and 12 militants were killed in the strafing, he said, adding that the toll could rise.
Local man Mohammad Khadim, however, disputed the army's claim that the targets were militants.
"The government (of Pakistan) is committing atrocities. They are killing innocent people. These are all local people's vehicles. There are no foreigners in this area. People are facing many difficulties because of the government's actions. We want the situation to settle down otherwise the people of Waziristan will stand up against the government," he told AP Television standing at the scene near Daygan village.
Pakistan is a key US ally in its war on terror, and it has deployed about 90-thousand troops in its tribal regions near Afghanistan since the 11 September 2001 attacks on the United States, in an effort to evict foreign militants and their local supporters.
Although some tribal elders claim no foreign militants hide in areas under their control, security forces regularly come under attack with bombs, rockets and assault rifles.
Violence has escalated in the region and militants have launched attacks almost every day since renouncing a peace accord with the government last month.
