Описание: This lesson highlights crucial cultural reforms that were undertaking during the Mao years in the realms of language, education, ethnicity, and gender. It provides an overview of the Chinese character simplification movement and the imposition of northern Mandarin Chinese on tens of mutually unintelligible dialects. We will also learn about the shift in higher education toward a Soviet polytechnic university model that privileged practical sciences such as engineering. Ethnic reform included creation of a new system of minority classification and associated institutional changes, here interpreted in terms of Chinese modifications to Soviet affirmative action policies. Changes in marriage and divorce laws and perceptions of the value of daughters complete the discussion of reform in gender norms.
